1/365: I Will Wake Up Again

I will begin
before I know a thing’s ended.
I will lose hope
when the beginning isn’t green and good.
My compass needle will wander,
because magnets are easily persuaded.
I will feel lost to circular wheeling
and argue for meaning.

But I will also recall:
reality is a dream we must make lucid
or it will wander away with us.
Remember your hands.
Look at your hands.
Do things with your hands.

I will follow these instructions
and wake up for a time;
I will feel powerful
until I am lost to sleep again,
until I forget again, until I dream again.
I won't remember that one who wakes up must also sleep
as winding and unwinding clockworks,
as a metronome whose sway knocks yes, no, yes, no, yes, no.

I will begin
before I know a thing’s ended,
and I will wake up again.

I am writing one poem every day in 2016, and I am using the hashtag #365poems to document my progress.
