81/365: Coffee Shops Are Portals

At fourteen, I dreamt
of cafes, books, and authors,
places to be seen

hovering over notes,
cigarettes left smouldering
while I worked the lines.

Dark coffeehouses
were alchemical wardrobes
for the bearing of

great novels begun
in cheap black notebooks.
My mind would be fire.

Three decades later,
I remember, insist still,
I'm crossing that verge

with old, bent notebooks,
minus cigarettes, but still,
portals do persist

to carry us on,
recollect our rebellions,
and crawl through wardrobes.

I am writing one poem every day in 2016, and I am using the hashtag #365poems to document my progress.
