#596: REWARDING PREJUDICE IS BEYOND THE PALE
Matthew Good has written about his desire to withdraw from The Weblog Awards due to the inclusion of Girl On The Right in the Best Canadian Blog category. If you read this example of the asinine material Right Girl believes passes muster on her website, you'll understand why he has asked to be excluded. Although Matthew Good has stated his wish to withdraw from the awards due to the nature of his company in the Best Canadian Blog category, I will not do the same. I do not want to withdraw what competition Girl On The Right has and leave her to place as one of the top three Canadian weblogs. I believe it to be a pathetic misstep on the part of the jurors for The Weblog Awards to have included such an irresponsible website in the ten finalists for this category, but I do not want to back out and leave her to take any of the top three places.
I am not against free speech, but I believe that hateful speech against an entire group of human beings should not be publicly rewarded, and believe me, when someone pronounces Islam as a whole to be "barbaric" and refers to Muslims as "infidel-murdering", I do view it as pointedly hateful.
The Weblog Award FAQ states that they "...will not be removing sites from the polls or the listings", and they sited that "[time] and money was budgeted to creating the polls, not rebuilding them while [they] try to run the contest." I would urge them, though, to take another look at Girl On The Right and take the time to tailor the Best Canadian Blog category.
It is interesting to note that it is stated on their page called Legal Stuff that "[by] submitting comments at The Weblog Awards site or otherwise using any communications features that may be available to you on or through this site, you agree that you will not upload, post, or otherwise distribute or facilitate distribution of any content ... that ... victimizes, harasses, degrades, or intimidates an individual or group of individuals on the basis of religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, race, ethnicity, age, or disability..." The standard for communication on their website obviously does not extend to the weblogs that they would choose to reward. On that same page, they do also say that "The Weblog Awards is not responsible for the accuracy, copyright compliance, legality, decency, or any other aspect of the content of any third party linked websites" and that "[the] inclusion of a link to any such third party site does not necessarily imply endorsement of, or association with, such other website by The Weblog Awards", but it was their choice to include such a website, and that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It does not speak well of them or the caliber of the 2006 Weblog Awards if Girl On The Right is allowed to continue to stand in this competition.
So, I guess you're left with two options: you can vote for me and keep her out of the top three, or you can boycott the awards altogether. Personally, I'm hoping that the person who chose Girl On The Right for the Best Canadian Blog category was simply too lazy to spend much time reading her content, because it's sad to think that The Weblog Awards would reward it in this manner.
Between now and December 15th (approximately), if you would like to support this website and urge the voting public in my direction, feel free to post the following link in your blog entries or sidebar, and then e-mail me to let me know of your awesomeness:
