178/365: For the Love of Being a Whore

flowers

If you are a woman,
you will not be lauded for marriage to writing
as though you are an ascetic
dedicated to holy work.
Men who cleave to their creative work are historic
while women must love children and men
and have tidy and adeptly cute hobbies
that decorate the history
our men create.

I am told I am only able because I have no children.
My achievements while being female
spring from my lesser maternal responsibilities.
They are born of accidents beyond my control.

Women are either whores or lucky children,
while men do serious work,
and, either by force or our own habituation,
our words are reduced to doilies
or painted mason jars
or pretty garden parties strung with lights.
