114/365: Present Day Poets Are Narcissists

Poetry is a diminished form now, some declare.
Its original intent was to explore larger concepts,
but now it is about subjective experience,
a stylized journal entry.
Present day poets are narcissists.

So, that's what's wrong, I think.
I am a narcissist.
I have the goddamned nerve to tell my own story,
to pick out the universal in the particular.

Then, I sit down and write a poem about it,
because this narcissist has a subjective experience to journal,
and she needs to stylize it.
