Reverb 10, Day 4: Wonder

Over the month of December, I am taking part in Reverb 10, and the daily prompt for today from Jeff Davis is this:
Wonder.
How did you cultivate a sense of wonder in your life this year?

Over the course of 2010, I cultivated and continue to cultivate my sense of wonder through iPhone phoneography. My iPhone has easily become my go-to camera over the last year.

There is something both soulful and thought-provoking that happens when life's events are translated through the lens. I have heard it argued that the camera removes a person from direct experience, but I would argue otherwise. The camera's eye has re-trained my own, taught me to look more closely, to pick out the details, to find the truth hidden by the distractions of my other senses. The camera has taught me to listen with my eyes, to hear the subtler stories told by the relationships between bodies and objects.

January:

February:

March:

April:
Jason Collett, Zeus, and the Bahamas

May:
Zach

June:
trapped!

July:

August:

September:

October:
Jack and Perdita

November:

December:
my grandmother tying my grandfather's shoes

I can't help but feel wonder at discovering that nearly lost moment of a gentle touch or a tired glance or an early morning street. The camera is unwavering, even when I cannot be.

PS.  I have I Woke Up Surrounded By Cats on the Phoneography blog. What that photo misses is the third cat behind my head and my mouthful of fur.
