Five Star Friday's 130th Edition Is Brought to You By James Fenton and Reverb 10

This Five Star Friday roundup is brought to you by different facets of the self, courage in the face of dentistry, a lost friendship, a critical eye, a sappy tomboy, uniqueness, an entreaty to stop being an ass, responsibility, uncles, luck, autism, high school, a hawk, boundaries, undoing, a tree sweater, being alone, grief, James Fenton, and

The writing of a poem is like a child throwing stones into a mineshaft. You compose first, then you listen for the reverberation.

Over the month of December, I am taking part in

Reverb 10

. It is the brainchild of

Gwen Bell

,

Kaileen Elise

, and

Cali Harris

, an "...open online initiative that

encourages participants to reflect on this year and manifest what's next. It's an opportunity to retreat and consider the reverberations of your year past, and those that you'd like to create in the year ahead."

There are

daily prompts

to guide you through December and into the next year, and nearly 2900 people are taking part by writing weblog entries and having conversations over twitter, in weblog comments, and anywhere else that they run into fellow reverb-ers.

This Five Star Friday is dedicated to this ambitious project and posts written by its participants as we head into 2011 together.

Happy Friday, Reverb 10!

Sometimes I like to remember and picture this: I am in a chair at a desk at a laptop computer typing. I am sitting next to a window, and outside there is light, and beyond that are people and animals, and buildings, and oceans and deserts, and beyond that is the atmosphere–and blackest space with planets and suns and stars and galaxies–and this big blue and white ball of a planet is hurtling through that space at millions of miles per hour, and I'm sitting on top of the planet–and I shouldn't forget how lucky I am to be on the ride.

Facing Realities

It's the same premise of not looking at that damn marker. If I never look at it, if I never read their names on it, I can pretend a little longer. I can pretend they're at their house waiting for me to arrive with my kids. I can pretend we are all going to go on a hayride or to the movies or to the mountains. But once I look at that marker, it's over. The fantasy ends. The reality begins. One look at that marker and I have to finally concede that they're gone.

On the last day of high school I sat down with my favorite teacher- he was the one who convinced me to graduate early instead of dropping out. I had thrown my final exam at him a year earlier and told him I wasn't taking it; it didn't matter; I was dropping out. He literally barricaded me in the room. Didn't allow me to leave. Forced me to listen to him explain how I could get out of this town AND not ruin my life by dropping out.
He changed my life.

And then there is the encounter I had with a bear while camping once, she on one side of the campfire, me on the other, the three men I was with, city boys, in the water. (Yes, I told them, as they ran for it, that bears will go in the water.) But they stayed where they were, and I stayed where we had all been just seconds before, by the fire. She looked at me, trying to focus through the smoke and the flames, wagging her big head back and forth. Our eyes met and she held my gaze for one brief second, and then turned and walked away. I can see it still, in my mind.
