Schmutzie.com is 6 years old today. Six!
Six years ago, I started in on this blogging thing. The Palinode had started his first weblog several months earlier, introduced me to the works of Mimi Smartypants, and put the idea in my head that I should maybe sit down and do some writing of my own. So, on August 25th of 2003, I sat down, signed up for an account on Blogger, and wrote about why you shouldn't swallow your own tongue.
I didn't exactly burst out of the gates.
When I wrote that first post back in 2003, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I knew nothing when I started. Nothing. I didn't know that you could contact these other people with weblogs on the other side of the computer. I didn't realize that other people actually showed up to read weblogs. Not only did I not know how to put images in entries, but I also didn't know that you could put images in entries. I seriously thought that typing my words into the text box on my computer screen was more like file storage. I was clueless about the very public and very social aspect of what I was doing.
I caught up, though. Six years later, I have learned to design my own weblog templates, become an amateur photographer, attended two BlogHer conferences, founded both Five Star Friday and the Grace in Small Things social network, become a contributing writer at MamaPop, rediscovered my passion for writing both prose and poetry, realized new passions in photography and needlecraft and graphic design, and found a well of friends and support that have brought me through both challenging and joyful times.
It's been a trip, to say the least, and so it is more than kind of fitting that this sixth anniversary of my entrance into the blogging arena has been brought in with a bang.
Yesterday, I showed up on page A7 of The Globe & Mail!
And, today? No more than 140 of my own characters have been published in Twitter Wit: Brilliance in 140 Characters or Less!
This all has me feeling so damn skippy that I want to celebrate, so I am going to do a completely unsolicited, unsponsored, just-from-the-goodness-of-my-heart giveaway, because without you, I'd still just be using this space as file storage. I have a silver 4GB Apple iPod Shuffle in my hot little hands. It has never been used and has never been taken out of the package.
Weird, huh? Who keeps a brand new iPod Shuffle just lying around the house? Me, obviously. I have this thing where I don't like to wear earphones in case of crazed psychopaths, but I'll save that story for another time.
So, here are the two ways to enter to win:
Enter both ways for two chances to win! I will assign each entry a number and then pick the winner using random.org to randomly generate the winner's number tomorrow afternoon.
I am six!
You get a present! Maybe.
I am six!
UPDATE: Steff is the winner of the iPod Shuffle! Congratulations!
