10 Things and a Video I Liked Enough to Show You: 1–7 October 2016

Melanie Safka's "Look What They've Done to My Song Ma" from 1970 is one of my all-time favourites. It's perfect for times when the world feels upside down.

  1. Along with the above song, you need to dig into The Roches, a trio of songwriting sisters who did amazing things with harmonies. Here's "Hammond Song" from 1979 to give you a start.
  2. I'm also a big fan of Dory Previn's song "Beware of Young Girls" from 1970.
  3. Okay, one more thing on the music front. You need to get Solange's new album "A Seat at the Table". Here's why.
  4. It's a bit of a stunt, but all in all I like Buzzfeed's giving three men their first period experience.
  5. If you think Canada is a nice country that is kind to its citizens, take a closer look.
  6. Only listen to this This American Life segment, "Really Long Distance", if you have the room and time to cry. I'm not kidding. I gasped with grief and choked on my toast.
  7. Thousands of women in Poland went on strike and took to the streets dressed in black on October 3rd to protest an extreme anti-abortion law currently under review by the Polish parliament.
  8. While announcing an NBA game, Jeff Van Gundy broke into a talk about violence against women and the need for the NBA to take it seriously. More of this in the world, please.
  9. Shaun King has proposed what looks like a brilliant boycott in service "to combat police brutality, racial violence and systemic injustice in America."
  10. I want all of these cool inventions right now.
